Kamla Persad-Bissessar is continuing her double-speak on national issues.
On the one hand, she is challenging the fairness of the Government’s decision to remove eligibility to public housing for families collectively earning more than $25,000 a month.
On the other hand, she is not providing similar fairness and accountability in the internal leadership election of United National Congress.
She is on firm ground in her housing challenge. She is on shaky sand in overseeing the electoral process of an election in which she stands most to win or lose.
Her two main challengers and the founder of the party continue to allege—and there is no denial of the claims—that there is a virtual incestuous relationship between Mrs Persad-Bissessar’s team and the managers of the system.
The general secretary, who is also employed at the office of the Leader of the Opposition, is an open flag-bearer for Mrs Persad-Bissessar. Others in the election process are also suborned. The voters’ list is still not public.
Aside for this unhealthy state of affairs, there are reports that councillors are being threatened that they will not be selected for next year’s local government election unless they back the Kamla slate.
The UNC social media operations are hijacked by Kamla activists.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar should know she would badly sully her legacy if the UNC election is found to be rigged.
Her housing challenge would lose credibility and legitimacy. She must distance herself from the management of the election and issue a public statement to that effect.
A word to the wise!
