He’s A Dreamer is one of ten ‘decs’ for a 3-y-o Maiden Stakes over six furlongs of Lingfield polytrack today; David Simcock’s charge, ‘best-in’ on the time-handicap, is drawn one and this in-form Newmarket trainer has, significantly, booked Jamie Spencer.
From every angle of form interpretation, 82-rated He’s A Dreamer ticks enough boxes and a 75-day(s) absence is a matter of some indifference; getting thoroughbreds fit on the world famous Suffolk gallops is a piece of cake for experienced Simcock, one of my ‘favourites’ judged on a splendid record with all-weather inmates.
We’ve backed some real ‘beauts’ from his yard and, hopefully, that will continue during the next few weeks, and beyond.
Spencer is right at the top of his profession, gone are the ‘showboating’ days, nowadays he’s extremely serious and most important, consistent and reliable. A joy to watch and jockeyship reains a prime fascination.
Broadway Icon and King Spin will have their supporters and there are six well-bred newcomers, many from ‘fashionable’ stables; however, as previously mentioned, none likes to win first time out because it leaves them with difficulties placing their charges next time. It doesn’t make sense, apparently, to take on winners second time out.
Therefore, whenever possible, my ‘play’ is to lay them, not to be placed and it has proved financially successful.
That vital first-up experience is key to the majority of trainers but it’s not the way I’d want to go were we still ‘in the game’ as owners, given the colossal costs of keep.
Simcock-trained, Hope You Dance, and Rivers Run renew rivalry in an ‘aged’ Maiden Stakes over twelve furlongs of Kempton ‘poly’ tonight and I’ll bet the former reverses recent Lingfield placings.
Neither was any match for easy winning favourite Stars and Night, fifth was the best Hope You Dance could manage, a neck behind heaviy-backed Rivers Run; my selection, beaten five and a half lengths, was hampered in the closing stages. Price-wise this Mastercraftsman filly makes each-way appeal with the three places on offer.
Interesting to note that nine-year-old Lutine Charlie has been dropped back to six furlongs for the ‘aged’ handicap which kicks off the obligatory eight-race ‘Wednesday-nighter!’
