I was flabbergasted to read that the Government, in its quest to make us a healthier nation, left margarine as a zero rated product but added 12.5 per cent vat on butter.
Does the Government know that butter is healthier for a person than margarine and butter substitute products? Or have they been taken in by propaganda that butter is a fat-enhancing product?
The basic ingredients in butter are pasteurised cow’s milk, cream and salt.
The basic ingredients in margarine/butter “spreads” are vegetable oils (soybean oil, palm oil, canola oil, sunflower oil), salt, water, soy lecithin (emulsifier), potassium sorbate (preservative), lactic acid, milk solids, citric acid, malto-dextrin, beta-carotene (colour), vinegar (acetic acid) and flavours (a total mystery!).
I leave it up to the reader to decide which one is the true food.
