The Police Complaints Authority (PCA) has launched an investigation into a fracas which occurred outside of the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court involving at least four police officers and two women.

A video of the incident, which was believed to have happened earlier this week, shared on social media yesterday prompted the PCA to “initiate” an investigation into what it deemed the alleged assault of “female civilians” outside the court.

The PCA in a statement called on eyewitnesses to come forward with any information that can assist them in trying to ascertain what transpired.

The video showed a woman being pinned against the wall by a man, believed to be a police officer, wearing a black suit and tie. He screamed at her to “behave.”

The video also showed another woman, who kicked another woman, being slapped in the face by the same officer.

Both women were eventually subdued, handcuffed and taken to the Central Police Station.

The PCA said that “Pursuant to Section 26 of the Police Complaints Authority Act, Chapter 15:05, the PCA has, on its own initiative, commenced an independent investigation into the incident.” Eyewitnesses or people with information are asked to contact the PCA at 800-2PCA /800-2722.
