T&T’s Martin Joseph will tomorrow compete for the Caribbean heavyweight Mixed Martial Arts Championship Title in Bridgetown, Barbados. He will face regional champ Bryan Bohoury of Fort de France, Martinique, in what is expected to be a keenly contested bout in the 95kg division. Bohoury, who is also king among the MMA heavyweight fighters in Martinique, is also the undisputed champion in the Caribbean.

But he could be up against the fight of his life as the Trinidadian is the number one contender in the Caribbean, after defeating Alex De Piza of Aruba in just a minute and 20 seconds last month.

Joseph’s credentials also include earning a bronze medal at the Pan American Mixed Martial Arts championship in Nicaragua last month and a silver medal at the President’s Cup Tournament in London, England last year. Joseph was also a runner-up at the Commonwealth Games in England last year as well as a bronze medal winner at the Pan Am Games in 2013.

His manager, former president of the T&T Mixed Martial Arts and Sambo Federation Jason Fraser, also boasts that when Joseph defeated De Piza last month, De Piza was then ranked among the top five fighters in the Caribbean at the time.

Yesterday Fraser told the Guardian that he was confident that his fighter could pull off the victory as he has had an intensive preparation camp that featured some of the best MMA fighters in T&T—such as Dwayne Hinds, Joash Walkins, Teron Bourne, Terron Diaz, Jeremy Tai- Chew and Jeremy Rudolpho at the Long Circular Mall Gym.

With a record of two wins and no losses, Fraser said Joseph has been progressing nicely and is comfortably one of the best fighters in T&T and the Caribbean. He has had limited resources to prepare properly for the fight, Fraser said, but a lot is expected from him tomorrow.

Joseph will be accompanied by Walkins in Barbados for the bout and Fraser is thanking all who helped his fighter during his preparation, including his employers the T&T Fire Services for giving him the timeout to train and go to Barbados for the fight.
