Congratulations to the Ministry of Trade for their prompt attention to investigate consumer complaints about the new VAT regime being added to the old 15 per cent VAT.
Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon reported on how some businesses had failed to properly apply the new 12.5 per cent VAT or adhere to good business practices.
To complete this important exercise, the Ministry should now publish, for all to see, the names and addresses of all the supermarkets and fast food restaurants that were adding the 12.5 per cent to the old 15 per cent VAT and ripping off consumers. This would show that the Ministry means business and not a gentle tap on the wrist.
