Los Parranderos de UWI marks its 35th anniversary this year.
The group was formed in 1980 by members of the Spanish Society at the St Augustine campus as a means of exposing the university fraternity to the art form. Over the past 35 years the band has grown from a mere campus aggregation to emerge as one of the premier bands on the national parang circuit.
Since 1993 when the group entered the competitive arena, it has won several awards and accolades including Best lead Singer (1997, 2005, 2006) for its lead vocalist Joanne Briggs. The band emerged as National Parang Champions in 2006 after a record-breaking feat of seven consecutive second places (1999 to 2005).
As part of its anniversary celebrations, Los Parranderos de UWI will stage a full-length concert on November 15, at the Learning Resource Centre, UWI, St Augustine. The concert is aptly titled Nuestra Cancion (Our Song). The group will tell its story in song by performing selections from its wide-ranging repertoire over the years. A commemorative anniversary book highlighting the history and achievements of the band will also be launched at the Concert.
Tickets for Nuestra Cancion are available at
UWI Bookshop (St Augustine Campus).
