
Yuvraaj Dookram and Curtis Humphreys—members of National Premier Division club champions, WASA Sports Club will be on opposite sides when the T&T Table-Tennis Association East Zone Team Invitational Tournament serves off today from 1 pm with ten matches.
The matches will take place at the WASA Sports Club, St Joseph and will continue tomorrow at the Arima West Primary School with six matches from 6 pm.
Dookram, recent winner of the Classified A-1 Men’s Championship Division crown will line up for Webster’s Wizards along with Ancil Russell, Priya Ramcharan and veteran player, Dennis Webster versus Ali Alliance led by Sharazz Ali from 3pm while Humphreys will represent Seechan Spinners which features Franklyn Seechan, Riad Abasali and Nirveeta Ramacharan versus Alexander’s Solo Soldiers at 2pm.
Overall, 15 teams have registered to compete in the zonal event which main aim is to highlight the veteran players, after whom the teams are named. The teams have been divided into three groups of five from which the top two will advance along with the top two third placed teams to the quarterfinals.
In Group One, Seechan Spinners, Springer Slingers, Garfield Gladiators, Alexander’s Solo Soldiers and Cleveland & The Boys will do battle, while in Group Two, Webster Wizard’s, Pyle Drivers, Hunters, Ali Alliance and Edwards Paddle Masters will lock horns, and Group Three comprises Pugh All-rounders, Noel Destroyers, ML Spartans, Mohammed Racketeers and Humphrey Stingers.
Among the top veteran players listed are former national singles champion, Courtney Pugh and Lionel Darceuil as well as Verna Edwards, Stantley Hunte and Faiz Mohammed while Anthony Brown, Kyle Borneo and Arun Roopnarine join Dookram and Humphreys, the top ranked local as A-1 players. Tournament winners will collect $6,000 while second gets $3,000, third $1,500 and fourth, $800.
