Since 1992, Alta has successfully shared the skills of reading and writing with over 10,000 T&T nationals, as well as with people of other nationalities who have settled in our country.
Our impact survey, done in 2012, showed that Alta had instigated great positive change in the lives of its students over the years. Our impact survey also showed that 52 per cent of our students, who attended Alta classes from 2001-2011, indicated that their experience at Alta had led to an increase in their salary. Many others spoke of improved confidence levels, better jobs and an ability to read to their children and assist with homework. These were things many of our students were not able to do before starting Alta.
Undoubtedly, it has been commitment from our tutors which has ensured that Alta can continue changing the lives of our students. If you would like to change a life by sharing the skill of reading with someone, Alta is the place for you.
About 25 per cent of the adult population in this country struggle with reading and writing. This makes tasks many of us take for granted like filling out a form or reading instructions on a medicine bottle quite difficult. If you would like to change that, Alta is the place for you.
By now, I imagine you are ready to sign up and become an Alta volunteer tutor and you are in luck because we are currently recruiting tutors for September 2016.
Alta requires only a Grade 1 or 2 in CSEC English General Proficiency (or equivalent) and your commitment to teach twice a week for two hours per session for the academic year following your training (September 2016-July 2017).
Providing that you can commit, call Alta now for an interview at 624-2582. After you call us, call a friend who you think may be interested and encourage them to call us too! After your interview, once it is clear that you can commit and that Alta is a match for you, you will have to observe and assist at eight Alta classes at a venue convenient for you, so you can see how it’s done.
By that time, you would have “wet your feet” and would be ready for the six-day Alta Tutor-Training course which takes place in April and May. Volunteers are trained in teaching literacy skills and team teaching. The collaborative environment is a good time to ask questions, grasp key concepts and develop team skills.
After your training, you are ready to teach and will begin teaching at an Alta community class twice a week for two hours for the academic year.
