When I turned on my television to see the Calypso Fiesta at Skinner Park last Saturday 30, and heard all the bantering, I thought I was looking at the wrong TV station and that it was a PNM political meeting with all their members present preparing for a next general election.
After checking the station again I realised it was the same station, CNMG, paying homage to those who had intentions of shutting them down not through their own fault, but by now to PNM singers exposing Trinidad to the outside world in such a derogative manner. And that was bad for this aspiring nation.
People who believe that they are entertainers are bankrupt in ideas. The lyrical content was silly. If they are depending on this as a career they should look elsewhere because, imagine, at Carnival time there were no songs pertaining to the festival, but just canvassing for the PNM—again.
There is always talk about taking our calypso music internationally, but the mighty Sparrow has done it. Now Machel Montano is doing it because he doesn’t indulge in the gross foolishness as some of the others, and it makes him successful, always.
There is a time for everything and people must accept that at this time it is time of merriment and not to continue with the mauvais langue to separate us. Finding fault is not the answer, but constructive criticism to make Trinidad a place of unity for all.
