The La Pierre brothers (Noel, Earl Jr, and Olujimi) will be appearing in Sons of Steel Plus at the Kaiso Blues Café, 85 Woodford Street, Newtown ,on January 31, at 6.30 pm.
The Sons of Steel concert was first held in Toronto five years ago, given the need to share with audiences their artistry on the steelpan. The concert has continued to develop and hopefully in years will feature other sons of the instrument. The La Pierre brothers will play along the band Faces, featuring Wayne Guerra, Leason Jacobs and Andy Garcia, who toured with Noel in China, Shanghai five years ago.
Noel, Earl Jr and Olujimi La Pierre all began playing the national instrument at a young age. Encouraged by family and close friends, the sons of well-known pannist Earl La Pierre took their passion, and transformed it into a career.
The Sons of Steel Plus concert is branded as “the alternative steelpan event for this Carnival season.”
Said Noel: “This event is not only about the La Pierre brothers, but it’s about enhancing and adding value towards our cultural package here in Trinidad and Tobago. It is demonstrating to the wider public that there is another side of steelpanmen and women that can also be enjoyed.”
The plus at this year’s concert is a special guest performance from Geoff Bournes, a renowned saxophonist, Trinidad-born but based in Toronto. He will share the stage once again with Noel whom he met on a tour at the Toronto Jazz Du Maurier theatre in 1994 performing with the band Calabash. Other local stars scheduled to perform are the Incredible Myron B, Kizzie Ruiz, KV Charles, Pedro Lezama and one of Trinidad’s new breakout artistes Chingee. (DMC)
