Good tidings have come to new mother Deton Assanah, 31, who gave birth to a baby girl in the backseat of a patrol car on Monday.
Yesterday, the officers attached to the Community Comfort Control Patrol Unit (CCP), who took Assanah and her newborn to hospital presented her with a hamper filled with milk, pampers and clothes for the baby.
The officers — Shondel Davy and Sheldon Lawson — visited Assanah and baby Christianna at the Mt Hope Women’s Hospital.
Speaking with the T&T Guardian yesterday, Lawson said he and Davy had been contacted by a senior official at the CCP and were commended for their heroic act in assisting to deliver the baby safely and taking both mother and baby to the hospital.
“They also promised their support along with officials from the Ministry of National Security. A lot of love is pouring in for both mother and baby, who are both healthy and resting comfortably at hospital,” Lawson said.
He said he and Davy were making arrangements to purchase a crib, as they were told by Assanah she had no money to buy a crib for her newborn.
“We are geared towards making this mother and baby happy so we will be getting the crib, along with other vital things for the baby, including clothes,” Lawson said.
“Christmas came early for them, definitely,” he said.
On Monday, at about 9.45 am Davy and Lawson were on routine patrol in the El Dorado area when they noticed Assanah on the side of the road, surrounded by onlookers, rolling on the ground and grimacing in apparent pain.
They volunteered to take her to the hospital and on the way, Davy realised that Assanah was actually in labour and on reaching Curepe, she was ready to give birth.
The officers pulled to the side of the road along the Priority Bus Route where they helped deliver the baby safely.
Assanah’s mother, Cheryl, who was with her daughter the entire time thanked the officers for their assistance and described them as “Christmas angels.”
