‘Food’ for thought

Allow me to comment on a good letter written by Noel Kalicharan on the evils of eating doubles. Now while I do not support him advocating that we should cut out doubles entirely, (although I too have done it) I do agree that it is not the healthiest of foods available.

If everyone stops eating doubles that would be taking away food from the mouths of the vendors and their families, so I don’t think it would be fair to suggest that. Let everyone read (on the Internet) as he further suggested, and educate themselves on healthy eating and make their own decisions.

However, if that happens, there would be a drastic decline in the sales of fried chicken, fries and the ever popular bake and shark, some of our “national delicacies.” Thank God the price of black pudding has deterred many from eating it.

While on the topic of health, let us advise the public on the evils of alcohol, cigarettes and commercial fruit juices and soft drinks full of sugar substitutes. Our people would have to read up on the topics to really understand or simply ask Dr David Bratt.

Hot dogs and canned vienna sausages has been a staple in many families for years, but health gurus would tell you to stay away from them leaving many to ask “Whey you want we to eat?” Let them read up on that.

My point is almost everything we consume, whether it be on a daily basis or occasionally, seems to be bad for our health, so the key words are education and moderation and it should start in our schools. I wonder how many schools in T&T teach this. Just some “food” for thought.
