Windies swimming against the tide

Like thousands of fans throughout the Caribbean diaspora, I am absolutely gutted by the massive defeat we suffered at the hands of Australia in the first Test.

The once-proud West Indian belly was mercilessly dissected in full view of the cricket world.

The critics here and abroad are making a mockery of our abject performance.

No captain in world cricket can stand up to that kind of shellacking. I feel sorry for young captain Jason Holder.

But skipper, I have hope for my nation of nations but is this hope a teardrop in an ocean of despair?

Bravo and Braithwaite displayed testicular fortitude and grit, exemplifying the belief that warriors are still alive, but cricket is a team sport.Do we need a full-time sports psychologist on board? I believe it is a major factor in our continued demise.

True enough, we are not fielding our best team for various reasons but sadly our reserves or replacements, unlike Australia, are swimming without hands against the tide.

Mr chairman, I am expecting a whitewash in this series, a far cry from your famous 1984 “blackwash” against England in their own backyard—Greenidge and Gomes imperiously chasing down 342 on the final day at Lords as my all-conquering West Indian heroes romped home to victory with 11 overs to spare.

I wish to make a simple request—can the players on this tour stand up and be counted?

Reza Abasali,

Cricket historian
