It would be a very foolish person indeed who wishes to ignore the fact that for many supporters, Mrs Persad-Bissessar’s popularity is intact. Like Sparrow says ‘She eat them raw.’ Whether the victory is a good or a bad thing for either the UNC or the country, is not momentarily in play.
What is most evident is that Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar has the support of the women in her party. Her stance that ‘big hardback men’ enjoyed their political life by hanging on to her skirt tail, for five years, appeared instrumental in her victory.
Political domestic violence was being perpetrated on her and the party faithful cuffed and kicked her attackers right down into the ground. Even if the UNC eventually disintegrates Miss K has prevailed. The Hollywood/Bollywood movie that describes politics in TT, is ready for distribution throughout the country.
One can only observe the vagaries of our local politics by quoting Shakespeare. ‘All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players.’ It is now up to the Opposition Leader to decide who will or will not be making an early political exit.
